Today’s museum board member is Kathy Berry:
Hi, Kathy! Can you tell us about yourself?
I am a retired teacher that got involved with OVMoD after visiting the wonderful special programs and exhibits when it was located in the Athens Mall. After 44 busy years of being a public school teacher, I love having time to enjoy reading, gardening, cooking, attending live music concerts, traveling, and walking with friends and my dog.
I have lived in Athens since 1971 after moving here from NYC where I attended Columbia U. and where my son was born.
What do you like about our region?
The beauty of S.E. Ohio will always impress me and there are endless new places to explore.
What is your favorite season?
Spring is my favorite season since I look forward to seeing wild flowers emerge, go bird watching as well as “play in the dirt” in my small garden.
What other museums do you enjoy?
I appreciate our local museums such as the Southeast Ohio History Center and the Kennedy Museum of Art. However, I am always excited to visit the Smithsonian Museums in DC. where my son lives and will finally get to visit the African American Museum in May.
Who are your STEAM idols?
I have too many STEAM idols to list. Locally, I admire the many female professors at O.U. And, because I know a few, I get to hear about their struggles to have their research acknowledged and funded. I agree with RBG “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made.”
What are your hopes for OVMoD in the future?
I look forward to the opening of the new museum space as well as continue to see the museum exhibits utilized in other venues like schools, libraries, and festivals like Kid Fest and the Paw Paw Festival.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
I don’t plan to ” grow up” just model after the young children I was lucky enough to spend my teaching career with and to tutor and volunteer with now. They know how to see the wonder and joy in everyday things.
