Dr. Alycia Stigall (our special guest!) www.ordovicianatlas.org

There are some resources here (and an app) for identifying fossils in Ohio. Dr. Stigall’s research is a part of a larger project – Digital Atlas of Ancient Life: https://www.digitalatlasofancientlife.org/
“The goal of the Digital Atlas of Ancient Life project is to provide a free resource to help individuals identify and better understand fossil species from particular regions and time intervals. In this respect, each Digital Atlas is akin to the types of field guides that naturalists might use to identify bird or plant species.”

Some Ohio University alumni have built this resource: https://timescavengers.blog/ with a mission of “Increasing accessibility of science and scientists through sharing our personal stories and scientific endeavors.”

Junior Paleontologist: https://www.nps.gov/subjects/fossils/junior-paleontologist.htm “The Junior Paleontologist Program is a part of the National Park Service Junior Ranger Program. The goal of the Junior Ranger Program is to connect young people to their national parks through a variety of in-park activities that are designed to introduce them to the national park system and cultivate future generations of park stewards.”

Cool Digs: Located at 6 Euclid Drive in Athens, OH
This local store sells rocks, fossils, gems, and garden supplies.

Check out the Dinosaur Gallery at COSI: https://cosi.org/exhibits/dinos
There are a lot of online resources here, including photos, videos, and more to learn about dinosaurs and fossils!

The Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery will be offering Summer camp boxes with a STEAM (STEM+Arts focus) for 2020. The boxes will come with several topical family-friendly activities prepared by museum staff in collaboration with regional STEAM professionals. The target age group for these boxes is younger elementary students (gr. 1-4)

Summer Camp boxes will also include one hour-long Zoom session with museum educators (“camp leaders”) and a special guest (scientist, music composer, researcher, etc.).

Due to generous support from The Athens Foundation and the Ohio Center for Equity in Mathematics and Science, we are able to provide Summer Camp STEAM boxes on a “pay what you can” model.

When you register, you will need to add an amount per box, but if you are unable to pay, you can choose “pay at event” and you will not be charged.

The boxes cost between $20-$40 for our museum educators to prepare and supply. Any additional funds will go directly to supporting quality STEAM education through the Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery!
